{"id":9261,"date":"2023-06-27T07:10:51","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T06:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in-italy.eu\/uncategorized\/venere-degli-stracci-piazza-municipio-napoli\/"},"modified":"2023-12-14T13:28:35","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T12:28:35","slug":"venus-of-the-rags-piazza-municipio-naples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in-italy.eu\/en\/in-tendenza-en\/venus-of-the-rags-piazza-municipio-naples\/","title":{"rendered":"Venus of the Rags, Contemporary art returns to Naples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contemporary art returns to <strong>Naples<\/strong>: from Wednesday 28 March 2023, in the evocative setting of <strong>Piazza Municipio<\/strong>, an extraordinary season will open with an impressive installation, <strong>the Venus of Rags<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This work is the fruit of the genius of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pistoletto.it\/eng\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelangelo Pistoletto<\/a>, a renowned Italian artist, who ranges in both painting and sculpture, and represents a fundamental point of reference within the Arte Povera artistic current.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The installation consists of a steel sculpture, a <strong>reproduction of the statue Venus with Apple<\/strong> by the Danish neoclassical sculptor <strong>Bertel Thorvaldsen<\/strong>, flanked by a mountain of rags. Photo credits: Letizia Puma\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>As always, there is plenty of controversy, with some wondering whether the work is intended to suggest a representation of Naples living in urban decay and neglect rather than the enhancement of the urban fabric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But that is precisely what art must do, suggest questions and put before the beholder many possible answers.<\/p>\n<p>Not only the Venus, but there will also be several installations scattered throughout the streets of Naples, the intention being to involve different artists to redevelop the streets and neighbourhoods of the Campania capital. The works are part of the &#8216;<strong>Napoli Contemporanea<\/strong>&#8216; project, an initiative desired by mayor Gaetano Manfredi and curated by Vincenzo Trione, the mayor&#8217;s advisor for contemporary art and <a href=\"https:\/\/in-italy.eu\/en\/in-giro-en\/may-18th-international-museum-day\/\">museums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition to the majestic Venus of Rags, <strong>Antonio Marras<\/strong>&#8216;s artistic work entitled &#8216;<strong>These Phantoms of Mine<\/strong>&#8216; was officially presented in the evocative spaces of Vicoletto San Pietro a Majella and the Rampe del Salvatore, thanks to the invaluable collaboration of the University of Naples Federico II, the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples and the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella.
