Parma, the city of art: Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, with its sophisticated atmosphere reminiscent of a mini Paris and the ducal heritage of Maria Luigia of Austria. Yet, it’s also a hub for contemporary art, hosting grand events and exhibitions, offering an immersive and captivating exploration of works by globally acclaimed artists.

Parma, through “Contemporanea” tells the story of art, spanning from Picasso to Pistoletto.

This incredible journey begins right from the bustling heart of the city, in Piazza Garibaldi. “Contemporanea. Masterpieces from the Collections of Parma” is the grand exhibition set up at Palazzo del Governatore, unveiling 115 works by 93 internationally renowned 20th-century artists, carefully selected from the heritage of the city’s most prestigious private collections. Curated by Simona Tosini Pizzetti, organized and produced by Solares Fondazione delle Arti with the support of Emilia Destination Tourism, APT Servizi Regione Emilia Romagna, you can visit it until July 21, 2024.

Displayed to the public for the first time, among paintings, sculptures, and rare photographs, you traverse a century of art history, from Duchamp to Picasso, from Morandi to Casorati, passing through De Chirico, Sironi, Burri, Chagall, Pistoletto, and many other great artists, offering an exceptional insight into the immense cultural heritage that these works represent for Parma and for the entire national culture.

The statements from Parma Mayor Michele Guerra

Contemporanea presents a unique perspective of our city. Parma is often associated with cultural elements rooted in Romanesque architecture, Correggio, Parmigianino, and Opera, rather than contemporary art” remarked Mayor Michele Guerra, setting the stage for the exhibition. “These elements have been sought after within collections, reflecting the passions of our citizens and forming a network that, even in private realms, exudes a distinctive cultural vitality. These works, curated within Palazzo del Governatore, will weave a narrative of collecting, contemporary art, and a fresh portrayal of Parma.”
