The Jekyll Case, insights from the authors

The authors offered this insight into the performance: when Stevenson wrote ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,’ London was a poor, smoky, and dangerous city, ideal for being influenced by noir and thriller. In crafting The Jekyll Case’ they’ve shed the ‘strange’ and philosophical dualities of Stevenson’s narrative, instead delving into a gritty investigative path through the underbelly of London. It’s a true crime tale that invites the audience to peer into the mystery and terror, complete with all the essential elements—murder, and an investigator unsolicited in his pursuit.

The audience holds the upper hand over the investigator; they possess the facts, taking on the role of protagonist, gathering details, scrutinizing data, and exacting reconstructions. Throughout the performance, we pose questions; the audience interprets, striving to grasp the criminal psyche, uncovering the crime scene in pursuit of understanding. Are murderers born or made? What motivated Jekyll to unleash Hyde? Who made the decision to kill? Is Jekyll the benevolent figure or the malevolent Hyde? It’s the tale of a corrupt soul breaking free from its confines.

The Jekyll Case, an introspective analysis of society

The tale delves into distinctly contemporary themes, inviting the audience not only to confront the dangers but also to explore the pleasures that emerge from their own shadows. Moreover, it offers a poignant catalyst for contemplating the imperative of engaging with one’s unconscious, despite the prevailing societal inclination to suppress it.

A journey we extend to all aficionados of literature, art, theater, and the art of performance. Maestro Sergio Rubini awaits you at the Teatro Bellini in Naples.
